Abstract: | During the last years, network testbeds have become an important re-search tool. They provide the proving ground to test, deploy and evaluate novel net-work architectures, such as active networks, as well as new communication protocols. Although testbeds demand a considerable effort for their deployment and mainte-nance, they have the potential to provide unique insights about the relevance and use-fulness of the tested matter. Based on our experience as administrators of the testbed of a large European research project, and as users of other research testbeds, we con-tribute an extensive analysis of the characteristics and requirements related to design, deployment and maintenance of such testbeds. We emphasize the need to base the network design on a comprehensive requirement analysis. We discuss requirements and analyze their impact on the testbed design. Furthermore, we give suggestions and guidelines to build and maintain a successful testbed. |
